Today’s Reading is Acts 5:1-11
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to deceive the Holy Spirit and to put aside for yourself some of the proceeds of the land?
4 While it remained, was it not your own? And when it was sold, was it not under your authority? Why is it that you have contrived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.
Someone just quoted this passage to me last night as they gave a class full of people a very stern warning about lying to the Holy Spirit when we turn in next week’s homework. The class has been pretty good, but this warning felt a bit out of step for me. I think it’s because of my legalistic background. I’m pretty sensitive to those things. I was thinking, “Why on earth would you need to tell a class full of Christian people not to lie about their homework?”
I imagine Peter was thinking the same thing. Why would Christian people even consider such a scheme, much less perpetrate it upon the church? But they did. I guess their priorities got a bit mixed up. They lost sight of Christ and the community of the Church and fixed their hearts on their own desires. These things don’t happen overnight. Our priorities, our morals, our perspective can slowly slide if we are not attentive to the leading of the Lord and to the fellowship of our siblings in Christ.
Lord, please keep us attuned to the discernment of Your Spirit. Keep us faithful to surround ourselves with people of wisdom and faith and give us listening ears and an open heart when they help us course correct along the way. Amen.
