The reading for today is 1 John 5:13 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB).

13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

I've heard 1 John being called "The Family Epistles" primarily because Paul wrote largely to churches and John's letters go straight to the family of God. Just like children resemble their parents, so, too, true children of God has His likeness. We become more like Jesus when we bring Him into our life through scriptures and constant prayers. Our ultimate goal is to become more like our Father. Martin Luther said, "It is not Christ walking on the sea, but His ordinary walk, that we are called on here to imitate."

1 John 5:13 is so uplifting. When we have the Son of God in our life, we will have everlasting life. Jesus told us in John 17:3 "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent". Eternal life is inseparable from Jesus and our assurance of salvation comes through the Word of God.

I just finished an attention-grabbing book by John Ortberg called "HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M REALLY SAVED?" One of the many beautiful quotes from this book sums it up. "Remember, salvation isn't about you getting into heaven; it's about heaven getting into you."

Another section of this book states that Jesus never asked his Apostles to go into the world and make Christians of all nations. In fact, Jesus never used the word Christian. He did, however, ask them to go into the world and make disciples of all nations. We are asked to become a disciple (apprentice) of Jesus. We are to strive to be more like Him. It's not about the skill of the apprentice; it's about the power of the master.

(NOTE: The bible uses the word disciple 269 times and Christian only comes 3 times and that was when Jesus' followers were becoming too diverse to be considered a sect of Judaism.)

Dearest Father. Thank you for allowing me into Your family and I ask that You keep me focused on becoming more like You, my Father. Point out anything I need to change. I love You, I praise You, I believe in You and I will follow You. Amen
