The scripture for today is Psalm 106:12 (NIV)
“Then they believed his promises and sang his praise.”
What strikes me in this verse is the use of the word “then.” It made me curious about verse 11. “The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived.” (NIV) Ah hah! God had provided yet another miracle, so “then” they believed.
Those stiff necked Israelites, always needing a sign or wonder to help them believe. I tear my robe, I beat my chest. I thank God I am not like . . . oh. . . uh oh. . .
To be honest, I have doubts that creep into my thoughts. God is so good to provide me with “then” moments. My first one came like this: As a young woman in my early 20’s, I had a very weak faith and was full of doubt. I tossed up an occasional “Hail Mary” prayer out of desperation, not really thinking God would answer.
Then one day, when I was in my later 20’s, I woke up and realized that God had answered every prayer of my lonely heart. I had a husband who adored me and a little baby boy to love. My eyes were opened, and I believed. God has since provided many of those moments.
Please take time to reflect on a “then” moment in your life. Maybe you will recall a big one or several small moments that combined for a greater one.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you that graciously and mercifully you provide “then” moment after “then” moment. Thank you for knowing that our human nature makes us need those. Help us to see them everywhere, in everything. Help us remember to humbly praise Your Holy Name when they happen. And for those who need their first, prepare their hearts and grant that we might be your vessels for provision.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
