The reading for today is Matthew 3:13-17 New International Version (NIV).
The Baptism of Jesus
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
What I love about these verses is that we have Jesus coming out of His baptismal water, the Holy Spirit descending upon Him and God’s voice from above confirming that Jesus is His Son and He loves Him. All three manifestations of our God in one scene! How awesome is that?
I’ve always wondered why Jesus needed to be baptized. He didn’t need to repent of any sins like John the Baptist was asking people to do to prepare the way of the Lord. I believe that Jesus did it to show His human form which puts Him with the rest of us humans He came to save. I believe He did it to show His respect for his Father by being obedient to Him. I think His baptism gave proof to any witnesses that Jesus was God’s chosen One. I also believe that like everything else that Jesus did, He did it as an example for us to follow.
Dear Heavenly Father, Bless us and help us in our attempts to follow your Son’s example and always bring honor to Your Name. Amen
