The reading for today is John 3:10.
"You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus," and you do not understand these things?"
Jesus is talking with Nicodemus who has come to better understand the teachings of Jesus. Nicodemus is a learned man, a Pharisee, who knows the ins and outs of the Jewish law and faith. Yet, he struggles to understand all that Jesus is proclaiming. To some, this may seem that Jesus is putting down Nicodemus. I think that is reality, Jesus is pointing out that there is more to faith and being righteous than knowing the 'book' answers.
God is not about logic or answers or rationality (and this is from me who really craves answers). God is about relationships and being. It has to be experienced. Jesus points this out when He says we have seen these things and experienced them but still you do not believe us. Nicodemus wanted a clear, point by point explanation with everything spelled out in detail. Jesus only offered that which can be experienced: God's love.
Faith is about living and experiencing. Faith is about continuing on when the logical part may say give up. Faith is about hope when all seems to be going in the opposite direction. Faith is hoping, trusting and loving God.
Father God, help us to shed our need for knowing all. Open our hearts to just experiencing Your love so that we can do the same for others. Amen
