The lesson for today is Psalm 112:1-9.
1 Praise the LORD.
Blessed are those who fear the LORD,
who find great delight in his commands.
2 Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
who conduct their affairs with justice.
6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
7 They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor.
This Psalm shows how trusting in the Lord and giving of ourselves makes our lives complete.
This Psalm addresses “fear” in two ways - the “fear” of the Lord in verse 1 and “fear” of bad news in verse 7. Fear of the Lord and following His commandments is how we honor Him and let the Lord guide us. It is our way to honor Him. This is “fear” in a good way.
On the other hand, having fear of bad news is a different way of looking at fear. This is the type of fear that causes us to cower, hide or become incapacitated. So, the message in this Psalm is comforting for us. Isn’t it great to have no fear of bad news? Yet there are times when we do fear bad news, when we are insecure about jobs, finances, health, family concerns or other problems we may face. We are called to rely on our faith in God to guide us through.
Dear Lord, strengthen us in our faith and guide us to do your work in this world with joy and compassion. Amen
