February 6, 2019 Daily Devotion

The scripture for today is Jeremiah 1:19 New International Version (NIV).

19 They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.

The verses from Jeremiah 4 to 18 leading up to the devotional verse 19 for today, paint a picture of Israel that looks like the world we live in today. The people of Israel strayed from God and descended into wickedness by worshipping idols and forsaking God and his commandments. God had a plan then and it continues through eternity. That plan is for us (humans) to live in a relationship with God that benefits us while we recognize him as our creator and Lord. When we descend into sin by making idols, thinking we are more important to life then God, he will take action to set the relationship into the correct balance.

In Jeremiah 1:9 & 10 God reveals the plan for Jeremiah: 9 Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

Note that God tells Jeremiah that he is appointed to reset the balance of power with the people of Israel by tearing down, destroying or overthrowing the leaders of Israel who are permitting or condoning the sins of the people. God then tells Jeremiah that he will have the power to “build and plant” the correct leaders to reestablish the relationship that sin is currently destroying.

Verse 19 then tells Jeremiah that: 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD. This affirmation confirms to me that God will never be thwarted in his plan for us!

In closing I hear verse 19 as the good news of Jeremiah and this declaration tells me that I need to examine my life daily and remind myself to step out smartly each morning to continue to worship our magnificent God and be in awe of his love for us.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father please forgive my sins and help me to hear your guidance and live my life to spread your love to all people I meet today. Amen
