The scripture for today is Psalm 47: 7-11.
7 Sing to the Lord with grateful praise;
make music to our God on the harp.
8 He covers the sky with clouds;
he supplies the earth with rain
and makes grass grow on the hills.
9 He provides food for the cattle
and for the young ravens when they call.
10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;
11 the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.
In this reading, the psalmist presents a list of reasons why we should praise God. Our lives should be responses to divine love. Our Lord is ever engaged in giving, we should respond with thanksgiving. He is our God in covenant relationship for ever and ever, and to Him be praise in every possible form.
He blesses us in ways that we cannot even imagine. But it is not only His children that receive the rain, the sunshine, the many beauties of creation and necessities of life. He provides all that is needed for life for all of His creation. He created this world, and He continues to sustain it with His mighty power.
O God, heavenly Father, I thank you and praise you as God. Keep me from ever allowing my thinking or my understanding to take the place of your revealed word. Give me wisdom to understand Your will and strength to carry it out. Give me self-control to put Your will ahead of my own and the concerns of others ahead of my own interests. Never let me forget that it is truly more blessed to give than to receive – not just at Christmas but all the time. In Jesus name I pray.
