The reading for today is Psalm 56:11.
“11 in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?”
Isn’t it comforting to say, “I am not afraid”? Having faith in God and trusting in Him gives us strength to face the challenges that we encounter in life. History is full of examples of people whose faith in God placed them in great danger, yet that faith gave them the strength to endure the challenges they faced. Some became martyrs and saints; whose lives and sacrifices inspire us to this day. Others survived their ordeals and also inspire us.
With the recent deaths of President George H. W. Bush and Senator John McCain, we have examples of those who survived life changing ordeals during wars. President Bush was shot down in World War II and was adrift at sea before being rescued. Senator McCain was also shot down in combat. His ordeal lasted over 5 years as a prisoner of war. Both men came through their ordeals and led lives of public service. They attributed their faith in God as giving them strength to persevere.
Most of us may never face such severe adversity in our lives. Our daily challenges may not endanger our lives or those around us, yet our faith in God provides us strength to endure those challenges we do face. How comforting to know we are not alone!
Dear God, give us strength to live our faith in this world. Help us to encourage others as we journey through this life. Let us put our faith in You and not rely on ourselves to face the challenges of daily life. Amen
