The scripture for today is Mark 8: 34-38.
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
My favorite verse in the Bible is John 3 verse 16: “16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”. My granddaughter Emma recited this during a preschool program, and I was struck by her recitation. Her recitation gave me the perspective that if we don’t grasp that Jesus came to lead us to salvation then we are lost!
In these verses in Mark, Jesus tells us unequivocally that if we believe in him as our savior, we will deny our sinful ways and move to embrace our fellow humans with love. So, Jesus tells us to change our human perspective to his perspective and recognize that as God’s people and we should strive to act as he does.
This change in perspective takes a constant focus on our part. It can be a struggle every day but if we pray daily for guidance and help from our heavenly Father, we can live a full and balanced life of love. A wise man once told me that we can only control how we react to a situation. So, if we always try to react in love then we shall be reacting as Jesus would have us react and he will be proud of our ways because we have picked up our cross and followed him.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father thank-you for the love you sent to us in our savior Jesus. Thank-you for his teachings and example of how-to live-in love.
