The scripture for today is 1 Peter 2:13-18a, KJV.
"Wherefore grind up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to everyman's work, pass the time of your sojourning here is fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received but by tradition from your fathers;"
Ah, Peter. The rough fisherman. The spokesperson for the group. The press secretory of the disciple's (in modern day terms). And in the writing, he is brilliant!
Peter tells us to turn away from our previous life before we knew of Jesus. He tells us not to be without knowledge of the things of God. Nor to go back to your previous style of life. Granted this can be very tough to do. But we need to strive towards this goal. He tells us also to never be without hope.
He tells us to respect the God of our fathers. He shows us how our mannerisms and conversations should be. Peter covers the whole gambit of our earthly lives. Yes, Mr. Tough Guy, Peter. He also throws out this reminder that everyone will be judged to everyman's work. But he first told us about faith, not works.
I had a cousin who loved the writings of Peter. She would encourage me to start reading these books. I did. It transformed me from the scholarly writings of Paul to the lay person of Peter. Being a working person, I could relate to Peter.
Pray for us to have understanding. Pray for us to have knowledge. Pray for our faith to be strengthened. Pray for God's Grace.
