The scripture reading for today is Psalms 37:5.
5 Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.
This Psalm talks of our need to put God first and foremost. It starts by saying that we shouldn’t be envious of those people who do evil and get ahead. Some have interpreted this to mean that if we do good works we will get everything we want. I think that this is more than just doing good works. Trusting in God and committing to Him should be a much deeper relationship.
I think of the Pharisee standing in the synagogue praying to God. He followed all of the rules but was only going through the motions in committing himself to God. He likely felt entitled to greater riches and honors because of his following these rules and rituals. Maybe God’s plan for him or for us is quite different than our desires.
Our relationship with God is more than just doing good works and following rules. Truly giving ourselves to God changes our focus and desires.
Dear Lord, Help me to see the work you need me to do in this world. Guide us in our daily lives to do your will.
