The scripture for today is Matthew 9:10-13, NIV.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Mathew 9 verses 10 to 13 are four short verses that describe to me God’s love. God understands just how broken we are. Each day is a challenge to love our neighbors and see our place in this world. Human understanding of our place in God’s kingdom was a huge question until Jesus was born and walked among us. The sheer magnitude of his life and the gift of salvation he is, can causes all believers to ask the question of; why me? Why would God sacrifice his only Son to save us?
The good news is we do not have to find the answer to that question because God declares that we are precious to him and we do not have to understand why he believes that. We only need to accept the gift of Jesus in our heart and praise the gift of Jesus as our Lord and Savior. I believe it really is that simple!
Let us pray: Heavenly Father thank-you for the gift of salvation that Jesus brought to us. Help us to translate your love to our brothers and sisters who don’t accept or understand your love through our faith and love. Amen.
