The reading for today is Luke 2: 28 – 32.
28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”
These five verses are uniquely beautiful because they convey so much to us about the value of being God’s children no matter what nation you are born into. Simeon was” just” a man yet God promised him he would see the savior before his death. Simeon shows us that we can witness the majesty of our Lord by being open to his call and looking for his declarations.
Simeon had been foretold that he would see the birth of the Messiah and he waited patiently for God to fulfill his promise. His faith and patience is a testimony to God’s love. For us, Simeon’s faith shows us that if we live each day understanding the magnitude of God’s love, then no matter what challenges we face, God is with us.
So, as we strive each day to grow in the realization that God loves us and is with us, let us remember how Simeon’s life is a testament to keeping our faith strong in God’s magnificence as we wait for the Messiah to come again.
Let us pray: Father “how great though art”. Help us to experience your call in our everyday lives to live in your light. Amen
