February 18, 2020 Daily Devotion

The scripture reading for today is from James 2:12-13.

12 “Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

Laws. We have lots of we have to abide by: federal laws, state laws, city laws. Then we have rules we have to take into consideration: rules on how to play games, rules of how your household operates, rules at our places of work. Sometimes there just seems to be too many rules.

God also gives us laws. Some people see the plethora of laws as a strict structure of what we should do and not do. Others simplify it down to "Love God and love your neighbor as yourself". Either way, I think we have to accept that we cannot and will not abide by the rules all the time. And what happens when we and others fail in keeping the rules is more important than living out the rules. Do not get me wrong, we should all do our best to try and live under these rules to the best of our abilities. But we also need to fully live into the fact that mercy is greater than judgement.

Mercy is God's way of giving us time to try again to live as He intends for us to live. We should adopt the same stand and seek to extend mercy as much as we can to those in need of it.

Lord, Bless us with your mercy so that we may in turn live out mercy with those around us. Amen
