The reading for today is Matthew 6:19-21.
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
You may have heard the words, “we will either worship wealth or worship with our wealth.” In this passage, Jesus talks about “earthly treasures,” “treasures in heaven,” and treasuring him. I know God wants my devotion, and he knows we all struggle with temptation.
So, I ask myself as I sit in the hospital room where my Dad is quietly sleeping near me … I ask myself as I reflect back on my life … do I treasure Jesus, or do I treasure the world? Do I obsess over earning more money or buying more things? Or am I consumed with living and loving like Jesus? Am I a giving person? Am I a prayerful person? Do I forgive? Do I share the Gospel? Do I love those that are not kind to me?
Take a moment. Ask yourself these questions. Where do they lead you?
Dear God, help me live from my heart and live for Jesus every day and in every way. Amen
