The scripture for today is Psalm 72:1
1 Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.
This Psalm is a prayer that was composed by King David as Solomon, his son, was ascending to the throne. It is particularly revealing about how King David thought about a human’s ability to govern and lead. This very short verse points out that humans are broken in their ability to be fair and reasonable with others in their community. We (humans) are prone to make mistakes because we don’t always stop or consider all the ramifications of what we are doing. God is all knowing and because of his intellect he doesn’t make mistakes. We are not blessed that way. So, when the King David asks of God “Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness” he is asking the Lord to guide Solomon so that his leadership is a continuation of the will of God.
If we expand upon on this thought today and ask God to guide all our current leaders shouldn’t we also ask him to guide us every day so that our motives and actions synchronize us with him? We can do this with daily prayer and meditation. It has been suggested by church leaders for centuries that if we start our day with prayer and meditation asking God for direction and end the day with prayer and thanksgiving for our day, we will obtain the help we need to lead a fulfilled life.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father help us to get out of our day to day bustle so we can hear you in our prayer time. Help us also to understand your silence when we don’t hear you. For your love is unquestionable and reassuring. Amen
