The scripture reading for today is Luke 2:47.
“Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.”
We do not hear a lot about Jesus’ childhood in the Bible, but here we see Mary and Joseph obeying God’s word in Parenting Jesus. They brought Jesus to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. After the feast was over, they began their journey home, but a day into their trek, they discovered Jesus had remained in the temple. They found him listening to the teachers and asking them questions. Thanks to the guidance from his parents, Jesus had grown physically, spiritually, and mentally. It is interesting to think that Jesus had to grow spiritually, but he had to learn the Bible, learn theology, and obedience, just like we do.
One thing I have always been extremely thankful for is the way my parents helped me in my spiritual journey. I was raised in a home full of love, prayer, and was introduced to God’s word. I was sent to Vacation Bible School and shown what it looks like to live a Godly life through the amazing example set by my parents. However, there comes a time when we all have to ask ourselves the hard question. What exactly do I believe? We have to do our own research and take ownership of our faith.
My parents made me go through Confirmation class, but then it was my choice if I actually wanted to get confirmed. Now it was my turn to use all that I had learned and decide for myself exactly what I believe and to profess that in front of my friends and family.
Jesus amazed those around him, even as a young boy, what an amazing teacher he was and what he was able to understand. Jesus was taught by those around him, but he was also guided by the Holy Spirit. We are also blessed to have the Holy Spirit to open our eyes that we might see and our minds that we might understand. The Holy Spirit unfolds scripture to us in ways that we would never see on our, if we take the time to listen. It is not enough to profess our faith as children; we must constantly study the word and share our faith as opportunities arise throughout our lives.
Lord, thank you for sending your Spirit to help me understand your Word and grow in my faith. Help me to see opportunities to tell your story, so that others may know your love! Amen
