The reading for today is 1 Peter 4:13
But inasmuch as you share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice exultingly.
My family moved a lot when I was growing up and I was frequently the new kid at school and church. I remember once arriving someplace just in time to participate in a celebratory event that I was not part of earning. On the surface it seemed like a pretty good deal. I got to enjoy the party without doing any of the work but then I looked around the room and realized there was a camaraderie among everyone else that I was missing out on. You see, they were all part of making the celebration happen – of all the work that led up to this reward. They were experiencing so much more than a party. They were enjoying the fruit of their labor.
That’s what I thought of when I read Peter’s words above. Peter talks about sharing in the sufferings of Christ and rejoicing over it because the joy they experience at the revelation of His glory is going to be so much richer because of that they went through to get there.
Lord, I am so blessed. I have suffered so little. Help me be faithful not to complain about any suffering you have allowed in my life. I know that I will be able to rejoice in the future. Amen.
