The scripture reading today is Hebrews 10:37-38, NRSV.
“For yet ‘in a very little while, the One who is coming will come and will not delay; but my righteous one will live by faith. My soul takes no pleasure in anyone who shrinks back.”
Day after Day — (Once for All) —Time after Time
The Letter to the Hebrews is a magnificent and complex sermon for discouraged people. It is a strange masterpiece, full of strong images (rooted in Jewish traditions), whirling around the present from the past and on to the future. In today’s verses, the author recycles phrases from the prophets Isaiah and Habakkuk.
For those old prophets, the Good News was just a vision—some dreams of future rescue from a world of wrath and disappointments that came along day after day after day. Oh, that the One would come! For the later, Christian Hebrews, this One had come, but the world was whittling away at their original joy in Jesus. Their community was losing steam, and some were ‘shrinking back’ and drifting away.
This Letter affirms that, though the world assaults us day after day after day, our faithful God rescues us time after time after time. The faith of Jesus (who has already come, ‘once for all’) makes it possible for us to ‘live by faith’ in the waiting. And, like Christmas only 4 days away, the next rescue will come ‘in a very little while’.
Come quickly, O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. Amen.
