The reading for today is Luke 21:33.
“Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. “
It’s funny how your perceptive of things change throughout your life. I remember when I was younger; I thought some things last forever. I was sure I was going to die from my first broken heart. I remember seeing historic buildings in Europe or the Mayan Ruins and it seemed like they had been there forever and would last forever.
Then you get older and realize very few things truly stand the test of time. The world around us is constantly changing. People come and go from your life. Old buildings are always being torn down and new ones put up in their place. As soon as you buy a new phone, it is almost immediately outdated. Not to mention the seemingly continuous natural disasters destroying entire communities right before our eyes.
Jesus painted a picture of what the end of this world would look like. He described a world torn apart by war and strife, natural disasters, and that even the heavens would be shaken. I understand that our time on this Earth is temporary, but it is hard to imagine this world and the heavens ceasing to exist. Jesus explains that His word is the only thing that will truly last forever.
We are entering the crazy holiday season with many material distractions. Let’s try to keep our focus on God’s word and make that the priority in our lives. Let’s make sure we take time to spend in His word and making that the foundation for our lives.
Lord, help me to slow down today and keep my heart focused on your word. Amen
