Today’s reading is Matthew 11:10.
“This is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you."
Many years ago, when my husband Barry and I were first engaged, we went to see the musical, "GodSpell' in Ford's Theatre in Washington D. C. One of the songs, "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord”, was a modern version of an older song. The song, as well as our devotion verse, are the perfect ways to discuss the Advent season and realizing that John was the messenger preparing the way for Jesus, our, Lord. Preparation was necessary, waiting was necessary, anticipation was necessary. All of the getting ready for the Messiah was assisted by John giving the people the final preparations to be ready for Jesus. Jesus had been instructing his disciplines and then would be moving on to other towns and cities.
Are you ready for Christmas? Hopefully not, take the time during Advent to prepare yourself and do the preparation, the waiting, the anticipation, to be truly enveloped with Advent. Slow down a bit and do less. Really less, less hustle and bustle, more prayer and reflection, more catching your breath and not baking the extra whatever, shopping for the thing, working overtime for extra money, and prepare your heart for the Messiah. Only 10 days until Christmas but only really 9 because most of us go to church on Christmas Eve. Unwind and ask your family what the most meaningful thing they have enjoyed from Christmas past. It is till Advent, prepare for the way of the Lord. Happy Advent.
Let us pray: Dear Lord Christ, let us prepare a way in our hearts during this Advent season. Let us not rush to Christmas and take this time to be truly be ready to love you and love our neighbor. Help us to reflect on our preparations, waiting and the anticipation of you, the greatest of all gifts. Amen.
