The scripture reading for today is Amos 8:7
“The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.”
God was not pleased with His people. They were cheating, lying, ignoring the poor and much more. God tells Amos that He is angry and will not forget the sins they are carrying out against Him and His children. This is not really the image of God that we have today. We have a forgiving God. We have a loving God. Sure, we may do many of these things, but we have Jesus who died on the cross, so we can be free of sin. Right?
Kinda. I think we too often forget how deeply God is angered by our sins. We jump from 'Oh I am doing something sinful" to "God forgives me and loves me" in an instant. We want grace to be easy and cheap. We forget about one important step: repentance. God holds onto our sins until we repent. Unless we acknowledge our sinfulness and turn back to God, those sins are still there; keeping us from unity with God. Are we going to sin again? Yes. But true forgiveness only comes when we truly acknowledge our sins and earnestly seek to return to God's Will. THEN God forgives. THEN God forgets our misdeeds. THEN we can be free.
This is one of the reasons I love our worship. Each week, we take time to confess on our sins and then be reminded that God truly does absolve us of our sins. We need those times. We have to stop and return to where God is directing us. Amen
Lord, thank you for your grace. Help us to live our lives in Your light. Amen
