The scripture reading for today is Psalm 146:5, NLT
“But happy are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.”
Hope is an integral part of my life. It adds so much meaning. There are so many distractions and disappointments we face in life. I have learned that having hope isn’t so much about wishing something would happen, but its trusting that I would be okay with what comes my way!
Working with hospice patients for so many years, I found that they even need hope! Early on I didn’t understand this concept as I knew they were leaving the earth soon. Growing more comfortable in my role through the years, I felt it necessary to encourage hope as it helped to alleviate fear. For some it is the hope of a cure, or of living long enough to witness an event or a milestone. I have experienced patients in and out of consciousness discuss the angels they have seen. Their hope is in eternity with the Lord.
Reading Psalm 146 is a great reminder of where to place your hope. Verses 3 and 4 talk about putting your confidence in powerful people. Their help may be temporary as when they stop breathing all their plans come to an end. Placing your trust and praise into God helps take our minds off our shortcomings and life’s disappointments. It helps us focus on our Lord.
Heavenly Father, we praise You for Your creation, blessings, forgiveness and all You do for us. Help us to be more like You, loving, just, faithful and patient as instruments for You on this earth. Amen
