The reading for today is Matthew 24:42
“Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord comes.”
I’ve been studying in 1 Corinthians lately and it has given me a slightly expanded perspective of the word “watch.”
1 Corinthians 14:8 says, For also if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle? I found a great cross reference to Ezekiel 33:6 that says that if the watchman sees trouble coming and doesn’t sound the trumpet, he is responsible for whatever happens to the people. If he sounds the trumpet and it is ignored, the people are responsible themselves for the trouble that comes upon them. I took this to heart. I feel responsible for sharing the message of God’s love with others. What they choose to do with the message is up to them. As a responsible “watcher”, I am compelled to sound the trumpet.
1 Corinthians 16:13 says, Watch, stand firm in the faith, be full-grown men, be strong. These are some of Paul’s final instructions in this letter to Corinth and I feel like they are the end result of what will happen if they follow his advice in the rest of the letter. They will become good “watchers.”
Lord Almighty, Holy One, Only God, make us faithful watchers who lovingly proclaim Your presence. Amen.
