The reading for today is Ecclesiastes 6:2
“A man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.”
In my lifetime I have frequently observed that I don’t know how people who aren’t Christians cope with death. A friend recently said to me that she is so glad she’s a Christian because she doesn’t know how she would get through the difficulties in her life otherwise. Today it occurred to me for the first time that it must be hard to have everything you ever desired and not be able to enjoy it.
Another friend once told me he would like to win the lottery. He said, “I know money won’t solve all my problems, but it would solve most of them!” Funny as that is, I don’t think it’s true. I think there are probably many people who seemingly lack for nothing but still feel an emptiness within that robs them of their joy.
Lord God Almighty, thank You for all You have provided. Please give me the heart to see and enjoy the many blessings You pour out. Amen.
