The verse for today is Colossians 4:2.
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
Paul’s letter to the believers in Colossae includes many instructions for living in Christ. The section in the last chapter challenges the believers to pray with purpose. It is common to be thankful in prayer, our Lord gives us so many blessings to be thankful for. But being watchful is something different. Another bible source shows the text as “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart."
Writing this right after Pastor Jim’s last sermon, I look at this verse in his theme of “what if we...”. What if we pray more often? What if we are more alert when we pray? When Jesus went to pray in Gethsemane, he instructed his disciples to stay alert. They fell asleep. What if we are alert or watchful of those around us? Then our prayers would more often include petitions for them.
Dear Lord, open our eyes to the world around us, help us to be watchful and alert. Amen
