The reading for today is 2 Chronicles 8:14 (NIV)

14 In keeping with the ordinance of his father David, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their duties, and the Levites to lead the praise and to assist the priests according to each day’s requirement. He also appointed the gatekeepers by divisions for the various gates, because this was what David the man of God had ordered.

Solomon, King David’s son, had been charged with appointing priests for their duties and appointing gatekeepers. He was given jurisdiction over the priests and Levites, and over military, civil and political affairs. David wanted to prepare his son to succeed him as king. Solomon would be given the important job of building the temple in Jerusalem. Before King David’s death, he gave Solomon his final admonition saying, “Keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, his commandments, his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn. . . for you are a wise man” (1 Kings 2).

In the early part of his reign, God had appeared to Solomon had a dream in which God appeared to him. The Lord told Solomon that because he truly worshiped and honored Him as he was instructed by his father, he could have whatever he desired. Solomon made a wise choice (pun was intentional). Solomon chose wisdom as his gift from God, and the Lord blessed him with wealth, honor, and a long life because of this choice. In

1 Kings 3:16-28 is an example of Solomon’s great wisdom and heart for justice. Solomon rightfully ruled on a matter between two women and the disputed living child’s parentage. When the people heard about his judgment on this matter, his fame spread far and wide. Examples of Solomon’s wisdom can be found within the pages of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.

God has a plan. His plan is good, even when we try to establish our plans that do not lead to Him. The Holy Spirit is there to guide us back into His mercy and welcoming fold. Let us try to use the wisdom we possess to follow the one true God. Let our lives reflect His love and grace.

Dear God, Help me to sow seeds of kindness in this world so that other may come to know You. Amen
