The scripture reading for today is Psalm 103: 1-4.

“1 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits--

3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,”

One of my favorite songs is by Rich Mullins. The lyrics say:

Sing your praise to the Lord

Come on everybody

Stand up and sing one more hallelujah

Sing your praise to the Lord

I could never tell you just how much

Good that it's gonna do you

Just to sing

Aloud the song that someone is dying

To hear down in the madding crowd

That you once were before you heard the song

You gotta let them know the truth

Is a light to shine upon the way that maybe they could go

And sing His praises once more.

After reading today’s scripture, this song immediately came into my mind. Just like David, and as Rich Mullins sang, I hear these verses calling for all that is within me to give honor and praise to God. Not just to make me feel good, but to give example to others.

In these verses, David speaks to his own soul to bless the Lord, while at the same time giving many reasons to do so. As David says, the Lord brings us so many benefits. The image of God “redeeming your life from the pit and crowning you with love and compassion,” is just overwhelming to me. How could we not praise the name of our awesome God?!?

Dear Lord, Thank you for your forgiving and gracious love. I ask for the strength to praise Your name and spread Your word as I go through my day.
