The scripture for today is Matthew 15:21-28, NIV.
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So, his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
This story is one of great love from our Father. Jesus was a Jew and therefore by the laws and customs of the day would not mix with Canaanite’s, let alone a Canaanite woman. Jesus ministry was to minister to the Jews and become their leader. In all instances Jesus shows compassion and this compassion shows God’s unconditional love.
In this story Jesus recognizes that all people are created equal in the eyes of God. If you believe in God and his son Jesus no matter who you are, how you look, where you live, how you have lived your life, you are a child of God. God helps us all because he created us to have a relationship with him.
In this encounter Jesus healed this woman’s daughter and proved to us that our God “is an awesome God” that hears our pleas for help no matter who we are.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father thank-you for creating us and loving us every day. Amen.
