The scripture for today is Matthew 6:19-20.
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
It is hard to not think about the American dream when considering laying up treasures on earth. We live in a culture that is driven by the mantra to live life to the fullest with little to no regard for eternity. But for Christians, living life to the fullest has a completely different meaning. In today’s scripture we are being told to build our happiness on a more noble and certain foundation. We are called to be spiritually rich toward God! The riches we have in Christ far surpass the empty treasures of the world.
Treasure on earth is not limited to money, it can be anything that we find greater satisfaction in other than God himself. Christ discourages us from covetousness in general. Rather, Christ counsels us to make our best things the joys and glories of the other world, those things not seen which are eternal, and to place our happiness in them.
I am thankful for all the blessings You have bestowed on me, but I ask that You help me concentrate more on the treasures of heaven. I look for Your guidance to help me keep my priorities straight.
