The scripture reading for today is Matthew 7: 7-11.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which one of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
Jesus is teaching in accordance with the spiritual capacity of the learners. He is telling them that even though they are sinners the Lord will give to them when they ask, when they seek, and when they knock the door will be opened.
The sinners would do this for their children, they would feed them if they were hungry and asked for bread or fish. They know how to give good gifts to their children. The Lord in his majesty will give to them so much more. Jesus is teaching them to ask, to seek, and to knock at the door … the door of salvation.
Dear Lord, help us to remember to knock at the door, and it will be opened and to ask for forgiveness as sinners. Amen
