The scripture reading for today is Daniel 2:20-23, NIV.
Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.”
This was a frightening time for Daniel. King Nebuchadnezzar could find no one to interpret his dreams and so he ordered all the wise men in the kingdom executed. Daniel was fearful for his life and the lives of his friends, and so he went to the king and asked for time to interpret the dreams. That night, God revealed the meaning to Daniel and this prayer of praise was the result.
We often do not have this dramatic of reasons to thank and praise God, but we definitely have reasons daily to do so. I heard somewhere that you should always begin your prayers thanking God. I have made this my practice when I do my morning devotions. In polite society, isn’t it always good to thank your host when you come to their house? How much more is it imperative to thank our God for all he gives us daily.
Can you imagine how full of joy Daniel’s heart was as he prayed this prayer of thanks? Let our hearts always be joyful as we approach God in his house with our prayers.
Dear God, we thank you for all you are, all you give to us and how you protect and walk beside us. Let us all approach you with the joy of thankfulness in our hearts! Amen.
