The reading for today is Esther 8:17
17” In every province and in every city to which the edict of the king came, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had seized them.”
The story of Esther makes my heart leap. What a great story of how God works through humans to further his plan for our world. Esther was a Jew in a foreign country. Her beauty brought her to the attention of King Xerxes who made her his queen. This union and Esther’s wisdom caused her to be able to thwart an enemy of the Jews so he was vanquished and the Jewish people were saved from destruction.
This 17th verse points out very descriptively how God’s plan for his people, the Jews would not be stopped. It also points out how God’s plan caused others to come to him and become followers because of his favor towards the Jews.
When I see how this type of story is repeated throughout the Bible it is a wonder to me how non-believers don’t understand the power of our one true God. For God shows his love every day in this confusing world. All they have to do is look around for the goodness that God causes to happen in different places all over the world. Today we can recognize his favor in the work of Lutheran Family and Children’s Service in our local community, Lutheran World Relief efforts in third world countries and Lutheran Men in Mission whose retreats help men in America grow their understanding of how God can help you live a full life.
Our God was truly “awesome” in Esther’s time as much as he is today. Let’s recognize his majesty and wonder so that we can spread his word.
Let us pray: Dear God thank-you for your word as it is published in the Bible. Your power and might are amazing. Help us to spread your works and good will through the way we live our lives. Amen
