The scripture for today is Mark 14: 26-31, NIV.

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,

and the sheep will be scattered.’[a]

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[b] you yourself will disown me three times.”

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Have you ever had a friend let you down by making a promise, even when they had the best of intentions? I knew of a colleague who had been counting on a ride home during the holidays. It was a trip of several hundred miles at a time when there were few options like busses or trains available in the area. When her friend did not provide the promised ride, it made the trip impossible. There was a ripple effect that led to a broken relationship. It is hard to feel so let down by people we put our trust in.

I imagine Jesus, even knowing what was coming, was hurt that His dear disciple, Peter, would not hold fast to his word, and would deny he even knew Jesus. Paul would have benefited by the words of Qoheleth who wrote in Ecclesiastes 5:2: “Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God…” As humans, we often fall short of what God intends for us to be and how he wants us to live. There is hope because God’s grace is bigger than our short comings, our sinful nature and even our best or worst intentions. Pray for God’s strength and guidance to keep you on the right path, and to help you stand up for what you know to be right and true.

Dear God,

Help me to stand up for what is right and true. Guide me to share Your truth with others. Give me strength and wisdom when confronted by the false gods of this world. Amen.
