The reading for today is Proverbs 9:1-6 from The Message
Lady Wisdom Gives a Dinner Party
Lady Wisdom has built and furnished her home;
it’s supported by seven hewn timbers.
The banquet meal is ready to be served: lamb roasted,
wine poured out, table set with silver and flowers.
Having dismissed her serving maids,
Lady Wisdom goes to town, stands in a prominent place,
and invites everyone within sound of her voice:
“Are you confused about life, don’t know what’s going on?
Come with me, oh come, have dinner with me!
I’ve prepared a wonderful spread—fresh-baked bread,
roast lamb, carefully selected wines.
Leave your impoverished confusion and live!
Walk up the street to a life with meaning.”
Lady Wisdom is inviting us to a banquet, what a wonderful event! After this past year of the Covid pandemic, we probably all have felt confused about life at least some of the time. We’ve seen times of isolation and loneliness. Many have felt the sadness and grief of losing a loved one.
In this Proverb, we are called to put down our concerns and join the feast. Wouldn’t it be a blessing for there to be a great banquet to celebrate the end of the pandemic. I’m not sure that will happen, but we will eventually be able to gather more with our family and friends. One thing that I missed while we were not having in person church services was celebrating the Eucharist. When we were offered drive-through communion, it was a real joy. Now with in person services we are able to celebrate this holy meal each week.
Dear Lord, Thank you for the blessing of Your holy feast. Help us to lay down our cares and confusion and join in the celebration. Amen
