When...we are silent
“Therefore, God also highly exalted Him and gave Him the Name that is above every name, so that at the Name of Jesus every knee would bend in heaven and earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11
“Every knee should bend…” Every tongue confess…”
This is the eventual universal moment of worship. “Every.” I can hardly wait for this moment. I look forward to that time when the Kingdom comes and we see the fulfillment of the Good News promised. “Jesus shall reign where e’er the sun does it’s successive journeys run.” (Hymn #434 ELW) The reign which brings everyone and everything to its knees… the reign which will cause every tongue to confess is the reign and rule of love. I can hardly wait.
But when the world is silent about the manner in which Jesus reigns, that moment is pushed back. When we are silent about the Lordship of Jesus there are people whose lives will continue to be caught up in bondage to another reign. I’m not saying that we are the ones who will bring the Kingdom of God into being. But I am saying that we can live into that reign. We can live ‘as though” Jesus reigns in our hearts and in our motivations. But when we try to “dominate” the world with an aggressive and judgmental Christianity that threatens people with destruction we are hiding the true nature of the Lord’s reign.
“Speak the truth in love,” says St. Paul, “that we may grow into Christ.” (Ephesians 4:15)
The Name which is above every name is Jesus. Jesus is the one Who bowed down to wash feet. Jesus is the one Who carried the Cross. Jesus is the one Who “emptied Himself and took the form of a servant.” (Philippians 2:7) Confess Him. Bow down to Him. Follow Him.
